How to Vacation with Kids and Keep Everyone Happy

During my travels and many conversations with fellow parents, I often hear the same complaints: "My kids are bored," "This isn't the vacation I signed up for," and "We’re spending way too much money!" It’s a common problem. Parents invest so much time, effort, and money into creating the perfect trip, imagining what their children would enjoy, but often forget to include them in the planning process. This oversight can lead to unhappy kids and stressed-out parents.

The Problem: Planning Without Input

Many parents fall into the trap of planning trips based on their own ideas of fun, forgetting to consider their children’s preferences. This disconnect can result in kids feeling disengaged and unenthusiastic, leading to complaints and a tense atmosphere. I’ve heard countless stories from parents about how their well-intentioned plans didn’t resonate with their kids, resulting in a vacation that was more stressful than enjoyable.

The Solution: Involve Everyone in the Planning

To avoid this common pitfall, I recommend making the planning process a collaborative family project. Start with a brainstorm session where everyone gets a chance to voice their ideas and preferences. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Brainstorm Together: Set aside time for a family meeting where everyone can suggest destinations and activities. Each family member can present their idea, listing pros and cons, and discussing the costs involved.

  2. Evaluate and Decide: As a family, evaluate each suggestion. Consider the budget, the feasibility, and how each idea can be incorporated into the vacation. Sometimes, compromises will need to be made, and that’s okay. The goal is to find a balance that everyone can agree on.

  3. Assign Responsibilities: Once the destination and activities are decided, assign tasks to each family member. Someone can be in charge of accommodation, another of transportation, and so on. This not only distributes the workload but also gives everyone a sense of ownership and responsibility.

The Family Vacation Pact

One of the most effective ways to ensure everyone is on the same page and no one feels left out is by creating a family vacation pact. This pact sets clear expectations and rules that everyone agrees to follow, making the vacation more enjoyable for all. In my travel journals, I’ve included a sample pact along with space for families to add their own rules. Here’s a snippet of what it might look like:

We promise to:

  • Stick to whatever brilliant rules we come up with (no matter how off-the-wall they might be).
  • Look out for each other like superheroes—no one gets left behind, lost, or without sunscreen.
  • Play as a team, whether it's beach volleyball, building sandcastles, or finding the best ice cream spot in town.
  • Laugh at each other's jokes, even the terrible ones.
  • Share snacks, stories, and sunscreen generously. No hoarding the chips, people!
  • Take a million photos, but promise not to grumble too much about posing for the 101st shot.
  • Remember that it's all about the fun, the memories, and maybe a little bit of chaos.

By agreeing to these terms, we officially kick off the best family vacation ever! Let's do this!

Why the Vacation Pact Works

Setting rules and expectations through a vacation pact ensures that everyone knows what to expect and agrees to the terms. This reduces the likelihood of complaints like, “This is not the vacation I signed up for!” Kids will appreciate having their voices heard, and parents will enjoy less resistance and more cooperation.
